Children and Technology

Children and Technology

Technology devices arrived to schools and homes and there is no way to take that back. Our children are using them for different means, as a learning tool, as a toy, for social interactions, research,or just for fun. Children are continuously exposed to the information they might be able to find online.
Parents are most often the first ones to introduce children to technology. Children are able to connect online both at home and at school, but increasingly in the places in between.  This is largely driven by the rise of mobile devices in more and younger hands, without adult supervision. Schools are also incorporating the use of technology into their educational practices more and more, and there is no doubt of the wonderful benefits this brings into the learning experience. So a community approach to teach kids to think critically on their own about what they are saying, doing, and sharing online is more important than ever.

We have seen 5 and 6 years old  children owning very expensive devices ,  parents usually support this by answering “all the other kids have it” or “they need this so I can contact them when they are walking home from school.”  But many have not given their children the guidance to use it safely and responsibly.  Most  parents are eager to learn how to do this, but they lack the knowledge of how to do it . Children are growing with technology devices in their hands without being constantly educated.

We need to work as a community and educate ourselves in order to approach it.

Are we  educating our children´s capacity to use technology  in a respectful and responsible way? We definitely cannot wait until it is too late, schools and parents need to work together in this matter. “Students need to learn trust, respect and responsibility for technology. Many of the social situations that come up in a school where computers are the only conduit of information must be addressed earlier rather than later, and parents and teachers need to be leading the way” – Holly Korbey. There is so much to teach and so much to learn about technology and its boundaries.

Giving our children access to technology is like going out into the real world, we guide them about issues of safety, manners, and overall conduct. We should do the same before they get online, and perhaps even before they get into a classroom.
