The decline of play: Peter Gray at TEDxNavesink

I’ve always been an advocate of the importance of play in children’s development and always been worried about the increasing divorce between preschool curriculum and free play. After watching this video I am even more concerned! You might find it controversial, I rather call it “eye-opener”.

“Play is where children learn to solve their own problems.

Play is where they learn the world is joy

Play is where they learn to get along with peers and see from others’ points of view, and practice empathy.

Play is, by definition, creative and innovative.” (Peter Gray)

Aren’t these the type of lessons we want our children to learn? Then, why are preschools getting more and more academic and even erasing completely free play from their schedules?

We invite you to watch this video before choosing your child’s preschool.
